DSC_4891Located one mile south of where the glaciers stopped, Martinsville Golf Club is rolling in the hills. The rich soil makes this a lush view of Kentucky Blue and Rye grass that has been loved and cared for by the Carmichael family since 1969. As you head down the first fairway, you’ll find each hole brings a new challenge and a breathtaking view from its tall pines and sycamores to the winding creek that meanders through the course.

The original 9 holes (today’s back 9) was built in 1925 and was expanded to 18 holes after the Carmichael’s purchased the course. Although built years apart and designed by different architects, the front and back nine are a perfect pair. Playing to a par 71, MGC is both challenging and fun. While low handicap players will need every shot in their bag to beat par, the average golfer will find the course fair and forgiving. And on those days when the game isn’t going your way, grab a hot dog at the turn and just enjoy the amazing scenery around you.

Indiana Golf Hall of Famer, Sam Carmichael, is the owner operator of MGC. On any given day, you’ll find him mowing greens or giving a lesson. If you happen to be there on a Saturday or Sunday morning, he’ll be teeing players off the first tee and sharing stories from his days on the PGA tour or coaching the men’s and women’s golf teams at Indiana University for 23 years. You might even get a swing tip or two from one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in America while you’re waiting to tee off.

Both Sam and MGC’s head golf professional, Jeff Peters are available for lessons. Whether you’re just learning to play, want to make a change to your swing, or need of a quick fix, golf lessons are a great way to increase your enjoyment of the game.

Course was great. Best greens in southern Indiana. Fairways full and lush. A must play course.
